A page for our newer or less experienced players

In January 2009, the club began running a series of weekly lessons on playing bridge and the programme is expected to continue for most of the year. Recognised by the English Bridge Union, the aim is to introduce new players to the game and provide instruction for  inexperienced players.  Although things are now under way, beginners or improvers with a basic familiarity of the game would benefit from joining the sessions, even part way through. However, a new series commenced on Wednesday 23 September 2009. Even so, it is not too late to join this latter set. Click on this link for further details: Learn Bridge or on this one for some Sample Material.

Additionally, an improvers' class is being held on Tuesdays as a follow on from the current learners' course, but will also be of interest to those needing a "refresher". Click on this link for further details: Improve your bridge.

Led by a qualified teacher, students of all ages and from all walks of life have the opportunity to learn the Standard English version of the game that is used by the vast majority of players in this country. Learning to play bridge offers chances to widen an individual's circle of friends as well as keeping those little grey cells active.

All course materials and instruction booklets are included in the modest £4 per session fee charged to defray the  teaching and venue costs. Eventually, students will be encouraged to participate in club events, initially perhaps at a beginners' and improvers' level, but this is not compulsory. Committee members and other experienced players will also offer a 'host' service whereby one will partner a new member wishing to make a gentle and 'fearless' entry into the more competitive arena, should this be needed.

Why not give the lessons a try? Further details can be gained from the club or secretary. Telephone the club on 01422 352346, Mick Clark on 01484 713677 or use an email link to the club below.

Since commencing the course, new players have built up some basic knowledge about bidding systems and card play. The topics covered so far and an outline of the material yet to be presented can be accessed by clicking on the links below under 'Learning materials'. They also include a sample convention card. This is a card that summarises the system a player uses and should be carried whenever playing in a competition, even at the most basic club  levels.

This site, from time to time, has a bidding or playing quiz, or general tip for you to think about. Use the 'Tips on better play' link on the left to look at this page and test your skill. Some of the advice is provided by our own members, whilst other suggestions come from Sandra Landy, the former World Champion. However, if you have something that puzzles you or would like to have a topic explored, just email the Webmaster or Secretary via the link below.

Landy defence to 1NT opening

Standard English was developed by Sandra Landy with the help of the Bridge for All drafting team – Mike Pomfrey, Jean Patefield and Simon Ainger. Bridge for All, introduces duplicate bridge and the English Bridge Union to new players in a friendly environment.  Launched in 1999, it is the nationally approved method of learning the game and has been formally recognised by the Open College Network.

Despite the fact that half a player’s time at the bridge table is spent defending, many students find defence is the hardest part of the game.  Click on the link below to view some of the articles on the defenders’ play of the cards kindly provided by Sandra which have appeared in English Bridge, a bimonthly magazine published by the English Bridge Union.
