About the club
The club has its own private premises and is well established, providing
regular duplicate bridge sessions for nearly 150 members. It is a member of
the English Bridge Union and the majority of the club events generate EBU
masterpoints. There are also occasional sessions that tie in with
simultaneous national competitions. In addition to a comfortable playing
area, the club has its own kitchen and licensed bar. Halifax Bridge Club has
three teams of eight players that compete in the Yorkshire Sunday League,
with another playing friendlies, but
most members content themselves with the following evening functions:
Monday first and third - teams of
four
second, fourth and fifth - pairs
Tuesday pairs
Wednesday pairs (beginners and improvers)
Thursday pairs
Visitors are most welcome at all times, but those intending to come alone
should note that a hosting system is only available on a Wednesday and
Tuesday afternoon. Then, at
least one club member is always free to act as a partner to an individual
guest or member. Occasional advice on playing and bidding can be sought
during this evening.
All evening events commence promptly at 7 pm and end at approximately 10.15
pm. Scoring is facilitated by the electronic BridgeMate system, providing
members with a competition result within minutes. A comprehensive breakdown
of recent results is regularly posted on this site. There is an additional
social duplicate bridge session on Tuesday afternoons. Annual subscriptions are £10.00 and members also pay £2.50 table money per session (£3.00 for visitors). Members are automatically part of the English Bridge Union on enrolment. Tuesday afternoons have a 50p discount as the session is shorter and does not generate masterpoints, which all the other sessions do. Various members' competitions, for individuals, pairs and teams, are held annually. Dates can be found on the Diary page.
In early 2009, a Bridge for All teaching programme commenced. Led by a
qualified instructor, the series of lessons were of benefit to both new
and inexperienced players alike. Another new round of
lessons for beginners commenced in late September 2009 and continues on
Wednesdays as an improvers' session. The next new series will start on
Tuesday 7 September 2010. Anyone wishing to take advantage of this
latter
course or requiring advice about lessons can obtain details from the club or
the secretary. The club can be found by leaving the town centre on Skircoat Road (A629) towards Huddersfield. After 200 yards, turn right into Prescott Street at the traffic lights just beyond the large HBOS building. The club is a further 50 yards along, on the right. Alternatively, from the M62, leave at J24 and follow the A629 towards Halifax for 4 miles. With a filling station and the swimming baths to the right, turn left into Prescott Street at the traffic lights. There is disabled access at the rear of the clubhouse and there are toilet facilities on the ground floor. On street parking is available, but visitors should be aware that, in some parts, restrictions are enforced by wardens.
